Desolation Base

In this project I went for a first-person game where the player must sneak through the guards in an army base and escape. There are three paths the player can take to reach the main objective which is to escape the base. The first one is through the base barracks, the sewers in the base, and the parking lot with the Humvees. There are also three optional objectives that the player can complete like collecting documents, sabotaging the armory, and turning the generator off.

What Went Right

Level Design

When it comes to the level design, I feel the layout is great and flows well. The outside areas provide more of an open sandbox even though it is small the player doesn’t feel tied to a path.

Time Management

I was able to complete all the tasks that I set up for myself in the time frame that we were given. There have been previous times where I overscoped what I was able to do in a certain time frame.

 Level/Mechanics

There are two mechanics that I did for the level being the AI and turret. The Ai patrol areas in the map and of sees the player on sight he will start chasing. The turret rotates in a certain area and if the player gets too close to it, it will shoot the player.

 Player mechanics

The player mechanic that I did feel was unique is the night vision. Night vision provided the player with the ability to see in dark areas.

UI

The Ui that I made for the end of the level was able to provide all the information for main mission, time remaining, what subtask the player did completed. There are also Ui for when the player gets captured or killed where he can restart or quit the game.

What Went Wrong

Lighting

When building the lighting it created areas where it was too dark to see. But there were also areas where the light clipped through other things.

Overscoping

ven though I finished the mechanics and the level on time I had to push through it to get it done on time.

Night Vision mechanic

The night vision works but in certain areas. For the night vision to work it must have a bit of light in the section to build the night vision effect out off.

Turrets

The turrets sometimes when they shoot the bullets can go through the walls and kill the player even though he is behind the wall.

Main Game Objective

Due to the time frame that I had I wasn’t able to make the main objective as entertaining as I wanted to, so I went for a simple get from location A to B.

Conclusion

It was a fun project where I was able to take all the skills and experience from past classes and put them to the test with this project. This is definitely a project that helped me realize what I'm capable of doing in a certain time frame. If would’ve put more time into the project, it would have been a much better project than what it is.
